I do not work for the government myself, but I know several people who do. Recently I was talking to someone who works within the Ministry of Justice. They explained that by 2015, 70% of the Probation Service’s work will have been sub-contracted to the private sector. Private companies will be required to tender bids for the work. Apparently, the minister responsible for this (Chris Grayling) was also responsible for many of the coalition’s recent welfare reforms.
My friend explained that these probation reforms are likely to mean that new staff will not be so experienced, and that the companies will be more focused on meeting targets rather than the quality of the service they provide to the public. This could result in a higher risk to public safety.
It has been reported on the ITV News that some 2,300 sex offenders will be among the criminals whose supervision is outsourced to private contractors under government reforms to probation.
Around 3,200 gang members, 8,400 people convicted of domestic violence and 15,900 robbery cases are also among the “medium risk” offenders set for private supervision, the National Association of Probation Officers (Napo) said. The public will be put at risk if such offenders are taken out of the care of the public sector and transferred to private firms such as G4S and Serco, the union said.
Furthermore, the coalition’s welfare reforms are widely believed to be likely to result in an increase in criminal activity, as hard up people may be tempted to steal in order to get by.
My friend said that one of the senior managers within the department had a meeting with one of the ministers responsible, in which they warned the minister that people could die as a result of these reforms. Apparently, the minister just sat there and laughed. Again, the senior manager reiterated that lives could be lost as a result of these government policies. The minister was very dismissive, and said words to the effect of “so be it” or “it’s hard luck” (I can’t remember the exact wording, but it was something like this). It was clear that he did not care about the consequences of his actions.
This may sound over-dramatic, but I cannot arrive at any other conclusion – it is clear that the current UK government and the ruling elite are happy to see ordinary citizens die if it means more money and power for themselves.
We have seen much evidence of this over the last few years – this government has pressed ahead with its Welfare Reform Bill in spite of the dire warnings that genuine claimants (including the sick and disabled) will suffer, and they also forced through the NHS Reform Bill and increased university tuition fees despite massive public opposition. On top of this, we have the abolition of the Disability Living Allowance, the limiting of the Employment Support Allowance to 12 months (even if a person has a lifelong illness or disability), and coming soon – the Bedroom Tax and the cuts to housing benefit and council tax benefit.
When this coalition government first came to power in 2010, we were reassured that the cuts would not be ideological, that they were based on a financial necessity. Yet the government ministers seem to be pursuing the cuts with a willful glee. Indeed, taxes on the wealthy have been cut (for example the 50% top rate of income tax has been scrapped, and corporation tax, paid by wealthy banks, has been reduced) at the same time that services for ordinary people have been decimated. Banks which have been bailed out by the taxpayer are still paying their staff massive bonuses. However, we are expected to believe that there is no money left! The money is there, it is just that the government and the wealthy elite (their best friends, don’t forget) want to hoard it all for themselves.
This certainly isn’t the first time that ministers have laughed while imposing draconian policies. In December 2012, it was reported that the chancellor George Osborne laughed his way through the mini-budget.
In a separate incident, some of the worst aspects of the government’s Welfare Reform Bill were removed by the House of Lords, but Lord Freud (the architect of the reforms) sneakily overturned these votes after the other members of the house had gone home!
How much more evidence do we need – the UK government is determined to murder its poorest and most vulnerable citizens, and is doing so with much merriment. I am not the only person who believes this – Samuel Miller, 56, a DS specialist, is accusing the British government of employing draconian austerity measures to murder its sick and disabled citizens. He has written to the office of the prosecutor at the ICC in The Hague, intending to file a complaint against the ministers at the Department for Work and Pensions who are considered most responsible for the “draconian welfare reforms and the resultant deaths of their society’s most vulnerable” – Iain Duncan Smith, Chris Grayling and Maria Miller.
When will the public say “WE’VE HAD ENOUGH!”
